Kinstler ultimately made the transition to portraitist, and soon established himself as one of the nation’s foremost portrait painters with more than 2500 portraits to his credit. For over seven decades Kinstler has devoted time topainting landscapes, watercolors, andteaching. He has authored five books. Kinstler has taught nationally, namely at the Art Students League and National Academy, NYC.
Seven US Presidents have posed for him: Richard Nixon , Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. His portraits of Ford and Reagan are the official White House portraits.
Kinstler has also painted First Ladies Lady Bird Johnson and Betty Ford.
For over sixty years, Kinstler has portrayed a virtual cultural history of this country.
Among those who posed for him include authors, Ayn Rand, Tennessee Williams, Tom Wolfe. Artists Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Norman Rockwell. Supreme Court Justices Harry Blackmun and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Business leaders John D. Rockefeller lll, Donald Trump, Sumner Redstone. Others include Tony Bennett, Carol Burnett, James Cagney, Placido Domingo, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, Gregory Peck ,Christopher Plummer, and John Wayne.
Seven US Governors, four Secretaries of State, twelve US Senators , NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and the presidents of universities and colleges including Amherst, Boston, Brown, Chicago, Colby,Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Hollins, Oklahoma, NYU, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Quinnipiac, Rollins, Smith, Wellesley, Williams and Yale.
Kinstler has painted over 60 US cabinet officers, more than any artist in the country’s history.
He was awarded honorary degrees by Rollins College, Lyme Academy College and the San Francisco College of Art.

The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian, owns over 100 Kinstler originals. In 1989 they awarded him the Copley Medal, its highest honor.
